Saphire Seconds

It wasn’t long ago;

I swear, it was only yesterday,

When the only thing that mattered

Was tomorrow.

But now it’s a long slide

Down the steep side

And I still can’t see the bottom.

It wasn’t long ago;

We were running through the fields

As flat as can be

And time was just a gentle wind.

But now it’s a long slide

Down the steep side

And I still can’t see the bottom.

It wasn’t long ago;

When the hills started rolling,

Like cresting waves on the sea

But we didn’t care—

Now it’s a long slide

Down the steep side

And I still can’t see the bottom.

It wasn’t long ago;

When we started to fall

The land tipped over

And we couldn’t stop.

Now it’s a long slide

Down the steep side

And I still can’t see the bottom.

Now every minute counts

And seconds are like jewels

Set in a watch

And every tick is just the sound

Of precious jewels

Falling…

It’s been a long slide

Down the steep side

And I think I see the bottom.

We both check our pockets,

Check the jewels we still have,

What we saved and what we lost

And what we spared and what we spent

And what we threw away like trash…

And what we have left.

Prosper from abundance

Reap what you can grow,

When will we hit the bottom?

I guess we’ll never know;

But until then,

I’ll try to spend

Every second

As a jewel…
